AR Tiers
In the shop we sell three tiers of ARs; Entry Level, Flat top and Free Floating Forends.
Entry Level AR – Usually has a Triangular front sight, collapsible stock and basic black furniture (Handguard stock and grip). These guns usually have 1 in 9 twist barrels (limits maximum bullet weight to 69 grains). Our entry level guns always have a dust cover, forward assist and chrome lined barrels as a bare minimum. This is why our base prices run in mid-$600s
Note: Modifying a triangle front sight taper pinned barrel to be a flattop is very difficult and almost always damages the barrel.
Flat Top AR – This is where the AR starts to make financial sense. Nearly identical to the “Entry Level AR” in every way the Flat Top trades the triangular front sight for a picatinny glass block. These ARs run mid-$700s and they are the most common sense place to start at for a new shooter. The gun is easy to modify and add parts too.
Note: Picatinny gas blocks have two heights “standard” and “rail height” in the image below the picatinny gas block sits lower than the picatinny rail on the upper receiver. When you observe the height disparity you must understand that the rifle cannot use a rail height front sight like the Magpul MBUS. A standard sight like Midwest Industries MCTARFFR www.brownells.com/rifle-parts/sights/front-sights/ar-15-m16-308-ar-front-sights-prod26112.aspx?avs%7cManufacturer_1=MIDWEST+INDUSTRIES%2c+INCxzzx would work in this situation.
Free Floating Forend AR – We sell ARs from this category twice as much as any other, reason being that our premium ARs as built to stay under the $1000 price tag. At $950 these guns have free floating forends which usually are 13” to 15” long. These rifles usually have 1 in 7” twist barrels (allows use of 62-90 grain heads), a premium stock and grip, like a Magpul CTR and Magpul K2 grip. Commonly we also spec out mid length (9” vs 7” carbine length) gas systems which substantially reduce the felt recoil of the rifle.
Note: Take notice how the rail and the forend and the upper receiver are the same height. This allows sights like the MBUS to be used.
