KGC Hawaii Firearms Safety Training Pamphlet
Thank for deciding to participate in Kauai Gun Club’s Hawaii Firearms Safety Training Program. Within this pamphlet you will find useful information concerning the Hawaii Firearms Safety Training held by Kauai Gun Club (KGC).
Training Schedule
The KGC training schedule may be found at www.jgbarms.com/hawaii-firearms-safety-training.html
Course Information
Completing the KGC Hawaii Firearms Safety Training / KGC Live Fire Training will serve as substitute for the State of Hawaii Hunter Education Program when applying for a “permit to acquire” a handgun within the State of Hawaii. See HRS 134-2 for more information, www.capitol.hawaii.gov/hrscurrent/Vol03_Ch0121-0200D/HRS0134/HRS_0134-0002.htm
In your Student Material pack you will find a Student Handbook (spiral-bound 5 X 6 inch book) titled NRA Guide to the Basics of Pistol Shooting and two Student Examinations in the packet marked NRA Tests & Certificates Enclosed (the certificate has been removed from the packet and may be issued to you by an Instructor after course completion). You are required to read the NRA Guide to the Basics of Pistol Shooting Book and complete your Student Examinations prior to attending the NRA First Steps Pistol Orientation / KGC Live Fire Training.
Registered / Confirmed students attending the course will meet at 8AM in the parking area between the Lawai Menehune Food Mart and Lawai Post Office on their registered day of training.
Upon arriving to the KGC Hawaii Firearms Safety Training / KGC Live Fire Training you will attend a lecture that reviews material covered in your self-study. You will also have your Student Examinations reviewed for accuracy. Once the student body shows competence on the course subject matter the “hands-on” portion of the course will begin.
In the “hands-on” portion of the course all students will be trained to show competence in the safe handling practice (loading, unloading and operation) of five types of pistols. The types of pistols studied are: Single-Action Revolver; Double-Action Revolver; Single-Action Semi-Automatic Pistol; Double-Action Semi-Automatic Pistol; Striker-Fire Semi-Automatic Pistol.
Once all students demonstrate safe handling practices with all pistol types the students fire each pistol type from the sitting and standing firing position. The pistol calibers fired will be 22 Long Rifle, 9mm Luger and 38 Smith & Wesson Special. Firing the 22 Long Rifle handguns are mandatory, all others are optional. All required firearms, ammunition and targets will be provided by Kauai Gun Club.
Course Requirements
All students must be over the age of 21 and eligible to own a firearm within the State of Hawaii according to the laws describe in HRS-134.
All students must wear closed toe shoes to the live fire portion of the course.
All students must provide their own ear protection, eye protection, brimmed hat, food and water when attending the live fire portion of the course. Optional items to bring are bug repellent, raincoat and a chair.
All students are required to bring their completed Student Examination and Student Handbook to the live fire portion of the course.
Passing / Disqualifying Criteria
The main focus of the course is for a Certified NRA Instructor to observe the safe handling practice of the student while operating actual handguns. Although understanding the subject matter in the Student Handbook is important, a student’s ability to pass the course will be heavily focused on the student’s aptitude in safely handling and operating the five types of handguns.
Any student attending the live fire portion of the KGC Live Fire Training will not be eligible to pass the course should they lack the required material and equipment described above in the Course Requirements section above.
Any student submitting a Student Examination with less than 75% accuracy will not be eligible to pass the course.
Any Student demonstrating unsafe handling practices which endangers the well-being of an instructor or student body will not be eligible to pass the course (based on the discretion of the Head Instructor).

The Affidavits will be available for pick up / mailing no sooner than seven business days after course completion
